GOODBYE: Going to Haiti!
![]()
Hey guys, I’m going to Haiti until August 26th! Let’s see what the U.S. State Department has to say about Haiti:
There are no safe areas in Haiti… Reports of kidnapping, death threats, murders, drug-related shootouts, armed robberies, break-ins or carjackings occur almost daily… In 2006, reported kidnappings of American citizens increased to sixty, including one victim who was killed. Many American citizens reported that they were beaten and or raped by their hostage takers. Kidnapping remains the most critical security concern; kidnappers frequently target children.
Good thing I’m not a child anymore! The state department also says that one should avoid public transportation. I’m glad, then, that my friend and I are flying from the capital, Port-au-Prince, to her family’s place in Northern Haiti. Or, I was until I read this:
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the Government of Haiti’s Civil Aviation Authority as not being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for the oversight of Haiti’s air carrier operations.
Ahem. See ya later.
